Portulaca grandiflora
Planting guide · Summer (Jun–Sep)
June is about keeping what you have. Highs average 40°C and lows rarely drop below 28°C, so plants no longer get a cool night to recover. From 15 June, outdoor work is banned across the UAE between 12:30 and 15:00, a useful reminder of how severe the middle of the day has become. The garden's rhythm should follow the same logic: water and work at the cool ends of the day.
Almost nothing new should go in the ground. Okra, Malabar spinach and a few heat-adapted flowers such as Vinca and Portulaca can still be planted, but every other new plant is a gamble. Instead, protect. Water deeply before 7am (DEWA's own window is before 8am or after 6pm), keep the mulch topped up, hold shade cloth over young trees, and check the drip system every week. Established natives slow down in June; that is normal, not a fault. Skip fertiliser and heavy pruning, and use the evenings to plan the autumn planting list.

A summer project
While outdoor planting pauses, indoor plants are the project that makes sense. Air-conditioned rooms stay cool, though they are drier and dimmer than most care guides assume.

Our tips for June
The soil is at its coolest and leaves have time to dry. Deep, early watering beats frequent shallow watering.
Check that beds still have 5 to 7 cm. Mulch breaks down quickly in the heat.
Check the shade cloth is secure and not touching foliage, and that nothing has been left in direct afternoon sun.
A single failed emitter can lose a plant, so look at the end of every line, not just the controller.
Decide what is going where, order seed, and book soil work for late August while the garden is quiet.
Watch out for
Many plants droop at midday and recover by evening. Check the soil 5 cm down before you add water.
Pots can be hotter than the air around them. Move them into shade, use light-coloured pots, and expect to water them more often than beds.
From 15 June to 15 September no outdoor work happens between 12:30 and 15:00, so jobs are scheduled early in the morning or late in the day.
