Planting calendar

The UAE planting calendar

Dubai's growing year runs opposite to most temperate gardens: the cool months from October to March are for planting and being outdoors, and the summer from June to September is about keeping everything alive rather than adding to it.

Dubai climate

  • Main planting season: Oct–Mar

October is the busiest month for planting.

  • Comfortable outdoor season: Nov–Mar

  • Midday outdoor work ban 12:30–15:00 (15 Jun–15 Sep): Jun–Sep

  • Most likely rain window: Dec–Mar

  • Peak summer heat: Jul–Aug

January

24°C

Cool, dry weather — the best month to be in the garden

Garden

  • Finish planting trees, palms and shrubs while temperatures are mild
  • Sow or plant out winter bedding, herbs and leafy vegetables
  • Cut back and tidy summer-flowering shrubs after their last flush
  • Watch new soft growth for aphids, which thrive in cooler weather

Pool

  • Keep weekly chemical balance checks; demand is lower but chlorine still off-gasses
  • Check the pump and filter run-time now that the pool is used less

What to plant in January

Peak flowering for many shrubs and climbers

Garden

  • Continue planting and transplanting in the cool weather
  • Feed roses, hibiscus and other flowering shrubs to support the display
  • Deadhead spent winter bedding to keep it flowering
  • Start hardening off summer bedding plug plants under light shade

Pool

  • Test and balance chlorine and pH weekly
  • Backwash or clean the filter if pressure has risen

What to plant in February

March

29°C

Last comfortable month before the heat builds

Garden

  • Finish any remaining tree and shrub planting before summer heat arrives
  • Overseed or patch-repair natural lawns before the growing season speeds up
  • Begin tapering establishment watering schedules toward a summer routine
  • Inspect palms for early signs of red palm weevil activity

Pool

  • Rising temperatures mean faster chlorine loss — recheck balance weekly
  • Check water level and top up as evaporation increases

What to plant in March

April

34°C

Heat is building; shift watering to early morning

Garden

  • Move watering to early morning as daytime temperatures climb past 30°C
  • Mulch beds to slow moisture loss as the soil warms
  • Watch new transplants closely; they are still establishing root systems
  • Reduce feeding of slow-growing natives; they do not need pushing into summer

Pool

  • Increase testing frequency as evaporation and UV exposure rise
  • Clean skimmer baskets more often as leaf and blossom drop increases

What to plant in April

May

38°C

Entering summer: prioritise establishment watering

Garden

  • Water before 8am or after 6pm to reduce evaporation loss, per DEWA guidance
  • Shade newly planted trees and shrubs that have not yet established
  • Check drip irrigation lines weekly for blocked emitters before the heat peaks
  • Hold off on major pruning; let plants focus energy on surviving the heat

Pool

  • Check chlorine levels more often; heat and UV burn it off faster
  • Run the pump longer per day to keep water turning over in rising heat

What to plant in May

June

40°C

Summer watering discipline matters most now

Garden

  • Water before 8am or after 6pm to reduce evaporation loss, per DEWA guidance
  • Shade young and recently planted trees and shrubs through the hottest hours
  • Check drip lines weekly for blocked or popped-out emitters
  • Expect natives and adapted plants to slow growth; this is normal, not a problem

Pool

  • Test pool chemistry weekly — heat burns chlorine faster in summer
  • Watch water level daily; evaporation is now at its highest

What to plant in June

July

42°C

Peak heat: protect plants and yourself

Garden

  • Water before 8am or after 6pm to reduce evaporation loss, per DEWA guidance
  • Keep shade cloth on young trees and shrubs through the hottest hours
  • Check drip lines weekly; a single blocked emitter can kill a plant fast in this heat
  • Avoid outdoor garden work during the 12:30–15:00 midday work-ban window

Pool

  • Test pool chemistry weekly — heat burns chlorine faster in summer
  • Consider running the pump in the cooler early morning or evening hours

What to plant in July

August

42°C

Still peak heat; hold the course on watering

Plant or sow now

Chilli,Aubergine,Cucumber

Garden

  • Water before 8am or after 6pm to reduce evaporation loss, per DEWA guidance
  • Keep shade cloth on young trees and shrubs through the hottest hours
  • Check drip lines weekly for blocked or damaged emitters
  • Hold off on planting; wait for temperatures to ease before adding anything new

Pool

  • Test pool chemistry weekly — heat burns chlorine faster in summer
  • Clean the pool more frequently; algae grows fast in high heat

What to plant in August

Heat begins to ease toward the end of the month

Garden

  • Water before 8am or after 6pm to reduce evaporation loss, per DEWA guidance
  • Check drip lines weekly as the work-ban period ends mid-month
  • Start planning the season's planting list and lawn renovation
  • Begin reducing shade cloth gradually as temperatures start to ease

Pool

  • Continue weekly chemistry checks as heat is still high early in the month
  • Inspect equipment ahead of the busier autumn pool season

What to plant in September

October

36°C

Planting season opens — the busiest month in the garden

Garden

  • Plant trees, palms, shrubs and climbers now that the cool season has begun
  • Overseed or renovate natural lawns to thicken them for the season ahead
  • Start seasonal bedding displays for winter colour
  • Resume a normal feeding programme for actively growing plants
  • Ease back irrigation frequency as temperatures drop

Pool

  • Chlorine demand starts easing; recheck balance weekly as the routine changes
  • Clean up increased leaf litter as deciduous trees begin to drop

What to plant in October

Comfortable outdoor season begins

Garden

  • Continue planting trees, shrubs and seasonal colour
  • Finish lawn overseeding or renovation if not already done
  • Feed and mulch beds to support the main growing season
  • Prune spring/summer-flowering shrubs lightly to shape after their last flush

Pool

  • Maintain weekly chemical balance checks as usage patterns shift
  • Check heating (if fitted) ahead of cooler evenings

What to plant in November

Cool weather planting and formative pruning

Garden

  • Plant trees and palms while the cool season continues
  • Carry out light formative pruning on trees such as Ghaf and Sidr
  • Watch for cool-season pests such as aphids on new growth
  • Keep an eye on rain forecasts and pause irrigation after rainfall

Pool

  • Continue weekly chemical balance checks through the cooler month
  • Check the pump and filter run-time now that the pool is used less
