Shade & structures
Pergolas & shade
Shade structures built for 45°C sun — aluminium, timber, sails and louvred roofs.
A pergola or shade structure is what makes a Dubai garden usable at midday — aluminium and louvred roofs need the least upkeep in UAE heat, timber needs the most, and most structures need a developer NOC first.
From AED 900 per m²
Fixed aluminium or timber pergolas. Motorised louvred roofs and large fabric-sail structures sit toward the top of this range or above it — see the cost guide.

Why it matters
What's included
Material matched to UAE sun
Aluminium and louvred roofs handle UV and heat cycling with the least upkeep; timber needs the most.
Adjustable louvred roofs
Motorised louvres open and close to tune shade through the day instead of one fixed coverage level.
NOC paperwork handled
Pergolas are usually hard landscaping — material, height and appearance need developer sign-off before work starts.
Smart-controlled where fitted
Motorised louvres and retractable sails can be app- or timer-controlled alongside garden lighting and irrigation.
Deep dive
Pergolas & shade
A pergola or shade structure is often what actually decides whether a Dubai garden gets used at midday, not just how it photographs. Four materials cover most of the market — aluminium, timber, fabric shade sails and motorised louvred roofs — and each trades off upkeep, cost and how much control you get over shade differently in UAE heat.
| Material | Upkeep in UAE sun | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium | Lowest | Doesn't warp, rot or need refinishing; powder-coated finishes handle UV well |
| Timber | Highest | Needs regular resealing/refinishing against sun and heat cycling; species choice matters |
| Fabric shade sails | Low to moderate | UV-rated fabric fades and needs periodic replacement over years, not decades; no structural upkeep |
| Louvred roof (aluminium, motorised) | Low | Adjustable shade through the day; the motor and sensors are the only real maintenance item |
Adjustable louvred roofs
A motorised louvred roof is the one shade structure that actually adapts through the day rather than giving one fixed level of coverage — closed for full shade at midday, angled open for filtered light in the morning or evening, and fully open on a mild winter day. Most systems pair with a weather sensor that closes the louvres automatically in wind or rain, and can sit on the same app or Wi-Fi control as garden lighting and irrigation. It costs more than a fixed roof, largely for the motor, sensors and moving parts, but it's the closest a fixed structure gets to matching shade to what the day actually needs.
Pergolas usually need a developer NOC
Most developer factsheets treat pergolas, shade sails and covered terraces as hard landscaping, needing NOC approval covering material, height and how it looks against the villa. See our NOC guide for what that usually involves.

Keeping it running: Garden Care
Garden Care visits check fabric sails for UV wear, timber for resealing needs, and — where fitted — that motorised louvres and weather sensors are still firing correctly.
