Soil & ground prep
Clean, low-salinity soil for lawns and beds — sized and delivered by the truckload.
Sweet soil is the UAE trade's term for screened, low-salinity soil used to build up beds and lawns over Dubai's saline, sandy ground — priced by the cubic metre, levelled and compacted before planting.
From AED 20 per m², supplied and levelled
Market range AED 20–60/m² depending on depth and site access. A full truckload for a large lawn or bed system costs less per m² than a small top-up.

Why it matters
Delivered by the truckload
Priced and delivered by the cubic metre, from a few m³ for a bed to a full tipper load for a new lawn.
Depth matched to the job
50mm for levelling, 75–150mm under a new lawn, 100–150mm in new beds, deeper again in raised planters.
Screened for low salinity
Sweet soil is washed or screened specifically to keep salt content down — ask any supplier for its EC (salinity) figure.
Built to take compost
Sweet soil is a clean base, not a fertile one — it performs best blended with compost or manure before planting.

Organic matter
About 0.69 m³ (14 bags at 50 L) of manure/compost blended in, 27.5% of the mix.
Blend roughly 25–30% compost or well-rotted manure into fresh sweet soil before planting — it's screened for salinity, not enriched, and is naturally low in organic matter.
Estimated material cost: AED 500–1,500, excl. VAT and delivery.

Deep dive
Ask any landscaping supplier in Dubai for topsoil and they'll offer you sweet soil — the UAE landscaping trade's own term for screened, low-salinity soil sold as the standard growing medium across the Emirates. Native ground here is dune sand or compacted, often saline fill, so almost every lawn, bed or planter in the country sits on soil that was trucked in, not the ground the villa was actually built on.
'Sweet' is the opposite of saline — sweet soil is washed or selected specifically to keep salt content down, sometimes sold pre-blended with organic matter as an 80/20 or 70/30 sweet-soil-to-compost mix. Quality varies by supplier, so it's worth asking where the soil comes from and, for anything beyond a small top-up, requesting an EC (electrical conductivity, the standard salinity measure) reading.
| Use | Typical depth |
|---|---|
| Levelling / patch top-up | 50mm |
| New lawn (over an acceptable subgrade) | 75–150mm |
| New flower & shrub beds | 100–150mm |
| Tree & palm pits | Backfill blend per pit, not a bed-wide depth |
| Raised planters | 300mm+ (full planter depth) |
Order roughly 10% over the calculated volume for settlement — delivered soil is loose and compacts once watered.
Don't skip the base prep
On compacted or rubble-heavy ground — common on newer Dubai plots — fork or rip the subgrade before adding sweet soil. New soil dropped straight onto hardpan sits as a 'perched layer' that drains poorly and can concentrate salt at the boundary between the two layers.
For a small bed top-up, sweet soil can usually go straight down. For a new lawn or a larger bed system, test EC and pH first — UAE soils commonly run alkaline (pH 8–9) even after sweet soil is added, which is one reason salt-tolerant grasses and adapted planting do better here than temperate species. Level with a screed board or rake to maintain falls away from the villa, then lightly compact and water before laying turf or planting, so the profile settles before anything sits on it permanently.
Sweet soil solves salinity, not fertility. It's screened for low salt content, not enriched, and on its own is typically low in organic matter, nitrogen and the soil biology that helps roots establish. Standard practice is to blend in roughly 25–30% compost or well-rotted manure before planting — see our soil improvement service — and cap beds with 50–70mm of mulch afterwards to slow evaporation and moderate surface heat.

Measure & test
Area and required depth are worked out zone by zone; on larger jobs we check EC and pH on the existing ground first.
Source & order
Sweet soil is ordered by the cubic metre from a bulk supplier, sized to area × depth plus a settlement allowance.
Strip & rip the base
Old turf or debris is removed and compacted subgrade is forked or ripped so new soil keys in rather than sitting as a perched layer.
Spread & level
Soil is spread to the target depth and screeded level, keeping falls away from the villa for drainage.
Compact & settle
Light compaction and a first watering settle the profile before turf, beds or planters go in.
Compost blend-in (if used)
Organic matter is worked into the top layer before planting — see our soil improvement service.

Keeping it running: Garden Care
Garden Care's seasonal fertilising keeps a sweet-soil base fed after the initial build, since a clean, low-salinity soil still needs organic matter and nutrients topped up over time, not just once at planting.
