Choose the plant for the light, not the look. For a dim, formal room, a kentia palm or lady palm is the safe choice. Beside bright glass, a bird of paradise, ponytail palm or spineless yucca will do better. A fiddle-leaf fig is the classic if you can give it a bright, still corner. On the shop prices we saw on 7 October 2026, a common floor plant over about 1.2 m costs roughly AED 350 to 1,000, and a statement specimen costs more.

Light first, then pets
Tinted or low-E glass cuts the light a plant gets, so a bright-looking living room can be dim for a plant. Match the plant to the light it grows well in, and keep every one of them out of the direct airflow from the AC (see our air conditioning guide).
| Plant | Grows well in | Pets (ASPCA) |
|---|---|---|
| Kentia palm | Moderate light, out of hot direct sun | Listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats |
| Lady palm | Indirect light; withstands deep shade | Listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats (the ASPCA entry names Rhapis flabelliformis, the same genus) |
| Areca palm | Bright indirect light | Listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses |
| Bird of paradise | The brightest spot you have; NC State lists full sun, six or more hours | Listed as toxic: mild nausea and vomiting, mostly from fruit and seeds |
| Fiddle-leaf fig | Bright indirect light, shielded from afternoon sun | Listed as mildly toxic: vomiting, diarrhoea, sap irritation |
| Rubber plant | Medium to bright indirect light, shielded from afternoon sun | Not listed as Ficus elastica; the ASPCA lists Ficus (weeping fig) as toxic and NC State flags rubber plant as harmful to cats, dogs and horses, so treat it as toxic |
| Dwarf umbrella tree | Bright, filtered light; no direct sun | Listed as toxic to dogs and cats (calcium oxalate crystals) |
| Spineless yucca | Bright light, up to full sun | Listed as toxic (saponins) |
| Ponytail palm | Full sun, six or more hours | Listed as non-toxic to dogs, cats and horses |
| Monstera | Moderate brightness, no direct sun | Listed as toxic to dogs and cats (calcium oxalate crystals) |
| Olive | Full sun, six or more hours of direct sun | Not on the ASPCA list; treat with caution |

Size: what you buy and what it grows to
Kentia palm, lady palm and ponytail palm all grow slowly (NC State Extension), so the height you buy is close to the height you will have for years, and you pay for that age up front. Rubber plant and fiddle-leaf fig are the ones to prune or train to size. NC State gives these heights: lady palm 1.2–3.7 m, and indoors fiddle-leaf fig and rubber plant 0.6–3 m, dwarf umbrella tree 1.2–1.8 m, ponytail palm 1.8–2.4 m and monstera 1.8–2.4 m. Measure the room, the ceiling and the corner before you choose.
What a statement plant costs in Dubai
These are prices as displayed on UAE shop websites on 7 October 2026, in AED. Sizes aren't standardised, shops change prices and stock without notice, and some show prices with VAT while others don't, so check at checkout. Treat them as ranges, not quotes. They are not rankings or endorsements. Our where to buy guide lists shops and markets.

The same species can cost several times more at one shop than another, because size, pot, guarantee and packaging differ. Don't compare by height alone. Ask what the price includes, whether the plant is delivered and what happens if it doesn't settle.
Pots, planters and drainage
Most plants arrive in a plastic nursery pot, and shops often sell a ceramic option as well. At one shop a ponytail palm cost AED 250 in plastic, AED 350 in white ceramic and AED 375 in black ceramic, so budget for the pot.
- Use a pot with drainage holes, or keep the plant in its plastic pot and slide it into a decorative outer pot. Lift it out to water, and don't let it stand in water (University of Maryland Extension).
- Choose a heavy pot for tall plants such as rubber plant and monstera. A light pot tips over.
- Move up one pot size at a time when you repot. A much bigger pot holds wet soil for longer, and NC State says fiddle-leaf fig is sensitive to overwatering.
- Match the finish to the room. Matte ceramic, stone and terrazzo suit calm rooms, and a brass collar suits a formal one. See our Modern majlis style for the full look.
Delivery, and getting a big plant home in the heat
Have large plants delivered. Terms differ by shop. On 7 October 2026 one shop listed free delivery on orders over AED 300 anywhere in the UAE, and another listed same-day delivery in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman for orders before 2 pm. Check the fee and the date at checkout.
Buy in the cooler months where you can. The average daily high at Dubai airport is about 41–42 °C in July and August, and a plant left in a car, hallway or loading bay in that heat suffers. October and November, and February to April, are the better months to buy and pot up.
- Measure the lift, the doors and the corridor before you order a tall plant, and ask the shop how it will be delivered.
- Pick the plant's spot before it arrives, and unpack it in the shade. Look under the leaves for pests before it joins your other plants.
- Expect some leaf drop for a few weeks. NC State says moving a rubber plant can trigger leaf loss, and that fiddle-leaf figs drop leaves in temperature swings near vents. Choose the spot and leave the plant there.
Placing them: living room, hall and majlis
Living room
Put the plant that wants light at the brightest window, but out of the afternoon sun and out of the AC airflow. A fiddle-leaf fig, bird of paradise or ponytail palm suits that spot. Use the shadier side of the room for a rubber plant, monstera or dwarf umbrella tree. If a plant stretches and pales, it needs more light, not more water.
Villa hall and double-height spaces
One tall plant beside the brightest glazing does more than several small ones. A tall spineless yucca or ponytail palm copes with strong light, and a kentia palm suits the dimmer side of the hall. NC State notes that spineless yucca has smooth, soft-tipped leaves, which helps where children walk past.
The majlis
A majlis is formal, often curtained and used in bursts. If yours is dim, choose a kentia palm or lady palm, which cope with moderate to low light (NC State), and set them as a symmetrical pair: either side of the entrance, a console or the main seating. If a room truly gets no daylight, a good artificial plant is more honest than a dying real one.
- Buy both plants at once, from the same batch, so the height and fullness match.
- Use identical planters in matte stone or ceramic, perhaps with brass collars.
- Choose slow growers, such as kentia and lady palm, so the pair stays matched for years.
- Turn each pot a quarter turn when you water so both grow evenly towards the light.
- Water by the finger test, 5 cm (2 inches) down, not by the calendar. A room used on and off has an irregular schedule.
- Wipe the large leaves monthly. Guests see dust on a big leaf, and dust blocks light (Ohio State Extension).
One UAE shop lists a curated 'Majlis Entrance Pair' set at AED 999 (Heavenly Plants, 7 October 2026), so a matching pair is a recognised idea. Ask what plants and pots a set includes.
Olive trees: only for the sunniest glass
Olive trees are a popular look in Japandi and majlis rooms, but NC State lists the species as full sun, six or more hours of direct sun a day, and describes growing it indoors as something done in cold climates. In most rooms behind tinted glass an olive will grow poorly. Keep one for the sunniest glass in the house or for a balcony. The ASPCA list has no olive entry that we could find, so treat it with caution around pets. Our olive page covers it as an outdoor tree.

Looking after a big plant
- Water by touch, and flush the pot every four to six months with at least twice its volume of plain water (University of Maryland Extension).
- Look under the leaves each month. NC State lists mealybugs, scale and spider mites as the common pests of kentia palm, rubber plant, ponytail palm and fiddle-leaf fig.
- Keep plants out of the AC airflow. Our air conditioning guide shows how, and the problems guide covers brown tips, yellow leaves and pests.
