A desk, a shelf and five hard-to-kill plants in glazed pots: ZZ, pothos, peperomia, snake plant and Chinese money plant. Built for low to medium light, dry AC air and the weekends and summers you are away.
The mood
What the green home office look feels like
A home office needs plants that stay small, tidy and alive through long gaps. Put a ZZ plant on the floor beside the desk, pothos trailing from an open shelf, a peperomia and a Chinese money plant on the desk and a snake plant in the corner. Glazed pots in white, sage or grey keep it clean next to a white or oak desk and a task lamp.
Light is usually the limit. NC State says ZZ can grow in very low light, even under fluorescent light, and pothos survives long periods in low light, though low light costs pothos its variegation. Peperomia tolerates low light for several months. Chinese money plant wants bright, indirect light and grows leggy without it, so give it the window end of the desk.
Dry AC air is the easy part. NC State says peperomia prefers medium to low humidity, and ZZ and snake plant are drought tolerant. Water by the finger test, and use self-watering pots for weekends and summer: IKEA UAE lists them from AED 9.
Check pets before you buy. The ASPCA lists peperomia and Chinese money plant as non-toxic to cats and dogs, and ZZ, snake plant and pothos as toxic.

A rough budget
AED 350–750
Plants AED 235–405: ZZ 49–95, pothos 38–55, peperomia 40–75, snake plant 29–89, Chinese money plant 79–89 (2026-10-07). Pots: IKEA UAE ceramic AED 25–69 each.
How to get the look
Step by step
Step 1: Read your light
Notice where the desk sits. Put Chinese money plant and peperomia at the window end; ZZ, snake plant and pothos can sit further back or lower.
Step 2: Choose one glaze family
Pick white, sage or grey glazed pots. Each needs drainage and a saucer you empty, or choose a self-watering pot (IKEA UAE, from AED 9).
Step 3: Trail the pothos
Hang pothos from a shelf edge or a high pot so the vines clear the keyboard, and trim them back to a leaf when they get long.
Step 4: Plan for weekends and summer
Water well before you leave. For longer trips use self-watering pots, a wick or a capillary mat, and move plants out of direct light (University of Saskatchewan).
Step 5: Wipe the leaves
Rub a finger over a leaf: if it comes away dusty, wipe the leaf with a damp cloth. Dust blocks light (Ohio State Extension).
Pots and planters
- Glazed ceramic pots in white, sage or grey, 12–20 cm, for the desk
- Self-watering pots: IKEA UAE sells them from AED 9, handy for weekends and summer
- A shelf-top or hanging pot so pothos can trail
- A 25–30 cm floor planter for the ZZ plant or snake plant
Furniture and finishes
- A white or pale-oak desk with open shelving
- A shelf or desk end by the window for the light-hungry plants
- A task lamp, and a tray or mat under pots to catch drips
In a Dubai home
What is different here
- A desk often sits near an AC vent. Move plants out of the direct airflow: dry air browns leaf tips (Iowa State Extension). ZZ, snake plant and peperomia cope with dry air better than the Chinese money plant.
- A flat office is often a bedroom corner with one window. Tint cuts light; low-E coating alone takes a further 5–10% (Melinda Myers). If plants stretch, put ZZ and snake plant at the back and the fussier ones at the glass.
- Summer travel: a closed flat with the AC off gets hot, so leave it on at a higher setting. Water well before you go, move plants out of direct light and use a wick or self-watering pot (University of Saskatchewan).
- Tap water here is desalinated seawater with minerals added back (a water-treatment firm's guide), and dissolved minerals can leave a white crust on pots. Flush each pot every 4–6 months with twice its volume of water (UMD).
Pros
- The easiest look to keep alive: ZZ, snake plant and peperomia forgive missed waterings
- Cheap to start: five plants for roughly AED 235–405 (checked 2026-10-07)
- Peperomia and Chinese money plant are non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA)
Cons
- Low light costs pothos its variegation and makes Chinese money plant leggy
- ZZ, snake plant and pothos are toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA)
- Small desk plants often sit near AC vents, which dry the leaf tips
FAQ
Common questions
Which plants suit a home office with little light?
ZZ plant, snake plant and pothos. NC State says ZZ grows in very low light, even under fluorescent light, snake plant tolerates very low light and pothos survives long periods in low light. Peperomia tolerates low light for several months. For a window ledge, add a Chinese money plant, which wants bright, indirect light.
Will my desk plants survive the summer when I am away?
Often, if you prepare. Water thoroughly before you go, move plants out of direct light, and use self-watering pots, a wick or a capillary mat (University of Saskatchewan). Leave the AC on at a higher setting rather than off. ZZ and snake plant tolerate long gaps between waterings (NC State). NC State says Chinese money plant wants moist soil and peperomia dislikes very dry soil, so check those two first.
Are these plants safe for pets?
Only some. The ASPCA lists peperomia and Chinese money plant as non-toxic to cats and dogs. It lists ZZ plant, snake plant and pothos as toxic. If a pet shares your office, build the look from peperomia, Chinese money plant, spider plant and parlour palm instead.
Can I put a plant under an AC vent?
Not in the direct airflow. Dry air browns leaf tips (Iowa State Extension), and a vent adds draughts on top of the dry air. Move the plant to the side of the desk, or choose peperomia, ZZ or snake plant, which cope with dry air better.
Where can I find cheap plants and pots in Dubai?
A May 2026 Emirates 24|7 article says Dubai Municipality's Warsan nursery sells indoor plants from about AED 2 to AED 60, Sunday to Thursday, 8am to 3:30pm, closed Friday and Saturday. IKEA UAE sells ceramic pots from about AED 10 and self-watering pots from AED 9; check delivery stock first, because several were unavailable on 2026-10-07.
