Lawns

Natural & artificial lawns

Paspalum, Bermuda or artificial turf, matched to how the lawn actually gets used.

Natural lawn stays cooler with the right watering and mowing; artificial turf needs none of that but runs far hotter underfoot in direct summer sun — pick by how the space is used, not just how it photographs.

From AED 35 per m² (natural turf, installed)

Artificial turf runs AED 45–130/m² installed — see the cost guide for both.

Why it matters

What's included

Natural or artificial

Paspalum and Bermuda turf for a living lawn, or synthetic turf for a maintenance-free green all year.

Salt-tolerant grass options

Seashore paspalum handles saline irrigation water and coastal soil better than most turf grasses.

Renovation, not just new lawns

Scarifying, aerating and overseeding brings a tired lawn back without a full re-turf.

Traffic-matched turf

Grass and artificial turf chosen for how much foot traffic, sun and shade the area actually gets.

Deep dive

Natural & artificial lawns

A natural lawn and an artificial one solve completely different problems, and the better choice depends entirely on how the space gets used. Natural turf — almost always seashore paspalum or Bermuda grass in Dubai gardens — stays genuinely cool underfoot, keeps growing and repairing itself, and needs mowing, feeding and a proper watering schedule to look right. Artificial turf needs none of that: no mowing, no feeding, no irrigation to keep it green, and it shrugs off salty water and heavy foot traffic — but it runs meaningfully hotter than real grass in direct Dubai summer sun. See our natural vs artificial grass guide for the full comparison.

Which natural grass

Two grasses cover most Dubai lawns. Seashore paspalum handles saline irrigation water and soil noticeably better than most turf grasses, which matters if your community irrigates with treated sewage effluent or your soil runs saline — see our irrigation service for water-source notes. Bermuda grass is the other common choice, tough and traffic-tolerant, though generally less salt-tolerant than paspalum. Less common but worth knowing: zoysia and St Augustine grass, both more shade-tolerant than paspalum or Bermuda, useful under a light-canopy tree. Compare all of Dubai's turf grasses side by side on our lawn grasses page.

Artificial turf's heat trade-off

Artificial turf's biggest trade-off in a Gulf climate is surface heat, not appearance. Independent US studies — not run in the UAE, but under comparably intense summer sun — measured synthetic turf surfaces reaching around 93°C (200°F) on a 98°F day, tens of degrees hotter than nearby asphalt and dramatically hotter than natural turf at the same time. Wetting the surface cools it sharply but only briefly: one study saw a rinsed turf reheat from 85°F back to 164°F within 20 minutes. In a Dubai summer, that makes bare feet, pets and young children on unshaded artificial turf a real consideration, not just a comfort preference — plan shade, or limit unshaded artificial turf to areas that aren't used barefoot in peak afternoon heat.

Synthetic turf runs hot in direct sun

See our artificial vs natural grass guide for the full heat-study data and sourcing before choosing artificial turf for a play area or pool surround.

Renovation instead of re-turfing

A tired natural lawn — thin, patchy, more weed than grass — usually doesn't need stripping and re-turfing. Scarifying (removing thatch and moss), aerating (relieving compaction) and overseeding, usually done in October as temperatures drop, brings most lawns back over a few weeks for a fraction of a full re-turf's cost. Garden Care includes lawn renovation as an add-on for exactly this reason — it's routine maintenance, not a rebuild.

Process

How it works

  1. 1

    Assess the area

Sun/shade, traffic, and the salinity of the soil and irrigation water, plus whether it's a new lawn or a renovation.

  2. 2

    Choose the surface

Natural turf species matched to shade, traffic and salt (see our grasses comparison), or artificial turf.

  3. 3

    Prepare the base

Old surface stripped, ground levelled, and for new lawns a sweet-soil base laid (see our sweet-soil service).

  4. 4

    Lay & settle

Turf rolled and laid or artificial turf fitted, watered in and left to establish, or brushed and seamed.

  5. 5

    First-season care

An establishment watering schedule for natural turf, or a rinse-and-brush routine for artificial, is handed over.

FAQ

Questions about lawns

Which is better for Dubai, natural or artificial grass?
Neither is universally better — natural turf stays cooler and keeps improving with care but needs regular watering and mowing; artificial needs no irrigation or mowing but gets much hotter in direct sun. See our comparison guide.
Which natural grass handles salty water best?
Seashore paspalum is the most salt-tolerant turf grass commonly used in Dubai gardens, which matters where irrigation water or soil runs saline.
How often does a natural lawn need renovating?
Roughly once a year for most gardens, typically in October — scarifying, aerating and overseeding rather than a full re-turf.
Is artificial turf safe for pets?
Generally yes for wear and salt tolerance, but check surface temperature in direct summer sun before letting pets on unshaded artificial turf during peak heat.
