Water features & fountains

Fountains, cascades and ponds — sized, filtered and pumped to actually cope with UAE heat.

A water feature's biggest challenge in Dubai isn't the build, it's what heat does afterwards — evaporation, algae and warm water all move faster here, so filtration and circulation matter more than the fountain itself.

From AED 8,000 per feature

A small wall cascade or fountain starts here; large waterfalls and filtered koi ponds run AED 15,000–40,000 or more — see the cost guide.

Why it matters

What's included

Filtration built for heat

Mechanical, biological and UV filtration sized to keep water clear as UAE heat accelerates algae growth.

Circulation, not stagnation

A correctly sized pump keeps water moving, which does more to prevent algae than any chemical treatment alone.

From wall cascade to koi pond

Features scaled from a small courtyard wall cascade to a full waterfall or filtered koi pond.

Lighting integrated

Feature lighting wired in alongside the pump circuit, not bolted on separately later.

Water features & fountains

A water feature in Dubai has to survive a climate that works against it almost every month of the year — warm water for most of the year, relentless sun, and dust loading that a temperate garden pond never sees. None of that rules out a fountain, cascade or pond; it just means filtration and circulation matter more here than the ornamental build itself, and cutting corners on either shows up within weeks as green water, not years.

What filtration actually does

A well-designed system handles three separate jobs, and treating them as one is the most common mistake. Mechanical filtration removes the physical stuff — leaves, dust, algae clumps — with screens, foams or a settlement chamber. Biological filtration relies on beneficial bacteria colonising a high-surface-area media to convert ammonia, from fish waste or decaying matter, into far less harmful compounds; a pond can look perfectly clear and still be biologically unbalanced, which is why this stage matters even when the water seems fine. Chemical/UV filtration — activated carbon, phosphate removers, and especially a UV clarifier — polishes the water and specifically targets the single-celled algae that turns a feature pea-green under strong sun. A UV clarifier is close to essential on anything exposed to direct Dubai sun for most of the day.

Circulation beats chemicals

The most effective long-term algae control isn't a chemical at all — it's keeping the water moving. Stagnant water lets algae establish undisturbed and lets warm water stratify, both of which favour algae blooms; a correctly sized pump that actually turns the feature's full volume over on a reasonable cycle prevents the 'dead zones' where this happens in the first place. Undersized pumps are a common fault on cheaper installs — they keep a fountain visibly running while barely turning the actual water volume over, which looks fine on day one and turns green within a month.

Evaporation is faster here than the installer's brochure assumes

Evaporation from an open water feature is faster in Dubai than almost anywhere, especially through summer — expect to top up more often than you might expect, and consider an auto-fill valve on anything larger than a small fountain. A slow drop in water level is normal; a sudden, large drop usually means a leak, not just evaporation, and is worth checking promptly.

Process

How it works

  1. 1

    Site & sizing

Location, water source and pump/filtration sizing worked out for the feature's actual volume.

  2. 2

    Shell & plumbing

Basin or liner, pipework and electrical (pump, lighting) installed together.

  3. 3

    Filtration fit-out

Mechanical, biological and, where needed, UV filtration installed and plumbed into circulation.

  4. 4

    Fill & balance

Feature filled, circulation run in, and water chemistry balanced before planting or fish are added.

  5. 5

    Handover & routine

Pump/filter maintenance schedule and top-up guidance handed over.

Keeping it running: Garden Care

Garden Care can include a water-feature check on request — topping up, clearing debris from filters, and flagging a pump or UV clarifier that needs attention before algae takes hold.

FAQ

Questions about water features

How do I stop my fountain or pond turning green?
Circulation matters more than chemicals — a correctly sized pump that turns the water over properly, plus a UV clarifier for anything in direct sun, prevents most algae problems before they start.
How often do I need to top up a water feature in Dubai?
More often than in a milder climate — evaporation is faster here, especially in summer. An auto-fill valve is worth it on anything larger than a small fountain.
Do I need a permit for a garden water feature?
A small self-contained fountain usually doesn't need the same sign-off as a pool, but larger built-in ponds or waterfalls can fall under your developer's hard-landscaping NOC — check before building. See our NOC guide.
