Dianthus is a winter-and-spring plant in Dubai. Seedlings go in from October to December, with November and December the best months once nights have cooled; in early October, with highs near 36 °C, plant in the evening and shade new plants. Flowers build from November and carry through the coolest months, when mean highs are between 24 and 29 °C, to about April. A light feed every three to four weeks and regular deadheading keep the display going. As temperatures pass 33 °C in April and 38 °C in May, plants decline and are cleared for summer bedding such as Vinca.
Meet the plant
Meet dianthus, the neat, fringe-petalled flower that sits at the front of the cool-season border. Each bloom is a small disc of notched petals, often marked with a darker eye or a contrasting edge, and a whole bed of them has the finish of embroidery rather than the sprawl of a typical bedding flower.
The 'pink' of its common name has nothing to do with colour. It describes the petal edge, which looks as though it has been cut with pinking shears, and that crisp outline is what carries the flower at a distance of a metre or two. In white, lavender, pink, red and salmon, it reads as fine and a little formal.
In Dubai it arrives with the cooler weather and does its quiet work from November to April: edging a bed of taller snapdragons, filling a window box, sitting in a pair of pots beside a door. It asks for sun, sharp drainage and not too much water, and gives a long season of low, tidy colour in return.
Dianthus chinensis, the China pink, and the bedding hybrids bred from it are among the neatest cool-season flowers you can buy. The plants are low and bushy, with grey-green leaves and flowers that are single, semi-double or frilled in lavender, pink, purple, red, salmon and white. The 'pink' in the name refers not to the colour but to the fringed petal edge, which looks as though it was cut with pinking shears, and that crisp edge is what gives a bed of dianthus its fine, tailored texture.
Dianthus is a cool-season plant everywhere it is grown, and UF/IFAS says it flowers from October planting through winter and spring, stopping when temperatures rise around May. In Dubai the same logic applies. Nursery seedlings go in from October to December, with local planting guides naming November and December as when dianthus performs best, flowers run through to about April, and the heat of May ends the display. It is not a plant to carry through summer.
Its weak point is moisture. UF/IFAS stresses that dianthus does not tolerate wet conditions, and Phytophthora root rot is the common cause of failure, so plant in free-draining soil, irrigate only when the top few centimetres have dried and keep mulch away from the stems. Resistant varieties, such as 'Telstar' and 'First Love', are named by UF/IFAS. Deadhead regularly to keep the display fresh: this is a flower that rewards attention at the front of a bed, where its small blooms can be seen close up.
Design
Plant dianthus at the front of a cool-season bed, in a drift of one or two colours, where its small, fringed flowers can be seen close up. It wants full sun in winter and free-draining soil, so raise the bed slightly or add grit if the ground is heavy, and irrigate by drip rather than overhead. It also suits window boxes and low pots by a door or on a terrace. Keep mulch back from the stems, and clear the bed in May for summer bedding.

Snapdragon
Snapdragon gives the vertical spikes behind dianthus's low mat of fringed flowers, and the two share the same cool-season calendar and sun.

Petunia
Petunia's trumpet flowers and trailing habit contrast with dianthus's small, upright, fringed blooms in the same cool-season bed.

Marigold
Marigold's warm yellow and orange contrast with dianthus's cooler pinks and whites, with similar planting dates and sun needs.
Care guide
Summer: Not grown outdoors through summer; it is a cool-season plant in Dubai.
Winter: Water only when the top few centimetres of soil have dried, roughly twice a week by drip, less after rain. It does not tolerate wet conditions.
Establishment: Keep lightly moist for the first two weeks; shade new seedlings during warm days in October.
Avoid these
Extra notes
Toxicity: The ASPCA lists carnations and pinks (Dianthus caryophyllus) as mildly toxic to dogs and cats, causing mild stomach upset and skin irritation; treat bedding dianthus the same way and keep pets from eating it.
