**Peak heat: survival month.** Climate: mean high 41.5°C, mean low 31.2°C, rain 0.8 mm. 0 plants to sow or plant, 45 in flower, fruit or harvest.

## Overview

July is the hardest month. Highs average about 41.5°C, nights hold near 31°C, and humidity pushes the heat index higher still. Your garden is not growing now; it is holding on. That changes how you judge it. A lawn that thins slightly or a shrub that drops a few leaves is conserving water, not failing.

Water deeply and early, ideally finishing before 7am, and let the topsoil dry a little between waterings. Dubai gardeners are blunt about this: overwatering, not heat, is behind most summer plant deaths. Keep shade cloth on young trees and shrubs, replace it if UV has rotted it, and walk the drip lines weekly. The midday outdoor work ban (12:30 to 15:00, until 15 September) applies to anyone working on your garden, so jobs get done early. Nothing new is planted in July. Spend the month ordering seed, planning beds and booking soil preparation for late August and September.

## Nothing new to plant in July

No plant in the library has a sowing or planting window in July. The next window opens in **August** ([what to plant in August](https://plantguide.ae/what-to-plant/august.md)). ## Jobs this month: Peak heat: protect plants and yourself

**Garden**
- Water before 8am or after 6pm to reduce evaporation loss, per DEWA guidance
- Keep shade cloth on young trees and shrubs through the hottest hours
- Check drip lines weekly; a single blocked emitter can kill a plant fast in this heat
- Avoid outdoor garden work during the 12:30–15:00 midday work-ban window

**Pool**
- Test pool chemistry weekly — heat burns chlorine faster in summer
- Consider running the pump in the cooler early morning or evening hours

## Tips

- **Finish watering before 7am.** Water deeply and let the surface dry slightly before the next watering. Roots that go deep are far safer than roots that stay near the surface.
- **Check shade cloth for UV damage.** Cheap cloth degrades in weeks. Replace anything thin, torn or brittle.
- **Treat containers separately.** Group pots in shade and check them daily. Light-coloured pots and a layer of pebbles or mulch on top slow evaporation.
- **Look at every plant, daily.** Irrigation timers cannot see a dry corner. A two-minute walk each morning is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
- **Plan September now.** Decide the bed layout and vegetable list, and order seed while there is nothing to plant.

## Watch out for

- **Mealybugs and scale.** Stressed plants attract sap-sucking insects. Check the undersides of leaves and the stem joints.
- **One failed emitter.** In July heat a blocked drip line can kill a plant fast. Fix it the day you see it.
- **Going away without a plan.** A failed controller or a blocked line while you are travelling can undo a year of work. See our guide to keeping the garden alive over summer.
