A small, crooked-trunked tree with silvery leaves that flowers bright yellow on bare branches in late winter and spring; it is drought tolerant, but its wood is brittle in wind.

## About

Meet the yellow trumpet tree, sold across the UAE under the name Tabebuia argentea. It has the look of a tree that has made its peace with dry country: a twisted, furrowed, silvery trunk, contorted branches and leaves that are green only in a dusty, silver-flecked sort of way. The silver is real. Tiny scales cover the leaflets above and below, and they turn the whole crown a muted grey-green that sits comfortably against sand, stone and gravel.

Then, near the end of the dry season, the leaves drop and the bare branches fill with golden trumpet flowers, up to about 6.5 cm across. The effect is stark and graphic, because there is nothing green to soften or compete with the yellow.

It stays small, which makes it a tree for a courtyard, a lawn corner or a drive rather than a shade tree. Its one real weakness is brittle wood, which does not like strong wind.

Tabebuia aurea, the silver or Caribbean trumpet tree, is the accepted name for a species that Dubai nurseries sell as Tabebuia argentea or Tabebuia caraiba. Despite the Caribbean name, it is native to South America, from Suriname and Brazil to Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is a small deciduous tree: University of Florida describes it growing 15 to 25 feet (about 4.5 to 7.5 m) tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, at a moderate rate, with palmately compound leaves of five to seven silvery-green leaflets.

Its flowering is timed by the dry season. University of Florida notes cheerful yellow flowers in winter and spring after the leaves drop, and botanical descriptions of the species place the display on leafless shoots at the end of the dry season, which matches the UAE's dry, rain-poor spring closely. Dubai nursery listings add that flowering can recur sporadically through the year. Like the pink trumpet tree, a drier winter tends to favour heavier bloom, though the evidence for this species is mostly growers' experience.

It needs full sun and well-drained soil, and nursery sources in the UAE describe high drought tolerance, medium salt tolerance and low wind tolerance. The wind point matters: Friends of the Urban Forest notes its weak wood and tendency to break up in storms, so site it in a sheltered spot and prune it early for a sound structure. Established trees need little more than an occasional deep soak and a tidy-up of dead twigs. It is a better fit for desert-modern and luxury schemes than for dense tropical beds.

## Through the year

The yellow trumpet tree has one clear event and a long quiet stretch. Leaves thin and drop in the cool months, then the bare, silvery branches fill with golden trumpet flowers in late winter and spring, the display University of Florida places in winter and spring after leaf drop. Fresh silvery-green leaves return as the flowers finish, and the tree then holds a modest, pale canopy through the long, hot summer and autumn. A scatter of out-of-season flowers can appear at other times, but the main show is late winter into spring.

| When | What | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Oct–Mar | Plant: Best planting window | Plant in the cool season in a sheltered, sunny spot. |
| Jan–Feb | Leaf drop: Leaves drop ahead of flowering | UAE timing is not well documented; this follows the winter and spring pattern reported by University of Florida. |
| Feb–Apr | Flowers: Golden-yellow trumpet flowers on bare branches | Dubai nursery listings add that flowers can appear sporadically through the year. |
| Apr–May | New growth: Fresh silvery leaves return after flowering | |
| Nov–Dec | Prune: Formative pruning | Build a sound structure while the tree is young; the wood is brittle, so avoid heavy, unbalanced canopies. |

## Care in Dubai

- **Watering in summer:** Low once established; nursery sources in the UAE describe high drought tolerance, so overwatering is the more likely mistake.
- **Watering in winter:** Reduce, since a drier winter is reported to favour leaf drop and heavier flowering; keep young trees from drying out completely.
- **While establishing:** Water regularly through the first year or two, then reduce to occasional deep soaks as the tree establishes.
- **Soil:** Well-drained soil in full sun; nursery sources in the UAE note it adapts to sandy, loamy and clay soils.
- **Feeding:** A light feed after flowering supports new leaf growth; avoid heavy feeding, which encourages soft, weak wood.
- **Pruning:** Prune while young to build a strong framework and avoid crossing or co-dominant stems. The wood is brittle, so do not leave a heavy, one-sided canopy.
- **Planting:** Plant October to March in full sun, sheltered from strong wind, with room for a spread of 3 to 5 m.
- **Pests and problems:** Few serious pests or diseases reported
- **Toxicity:** Not known to be significantly toxic.

## Good and bad

**Pros**
- Bright yellow trumpet flowers on bare branches in late winter and spring
- Silvery foliage and a sculptural, twisting trunk suit desert-modern gardens
- Drought tolerant once established, with modest water needs
- Stays a manageable size for courtyards, drives and lawn corners
- Few serious pest or disease problems reported

**Cons**
- Brittle wood can break in strong wind, so it needs a sheltered spot
- Small crown gives light shade, not dense cover
- Medium salt tolerance only; not for direct sea spray
- Briefly bare while flowering, and plain silvery green the rest of the year

## Common mistakes

- Planting it on an exposed, windy edge. Several sources note the weak, brittle wood, and nursery listings in the UAE rate its wind tolerance as low.
- Watering heavily through winter. A drier winter is reported to favour leaf drop and fuller flowering, and the tree is drought tolerant once established.
- Expecting dense shade. The crown is small and silvery, so it works as an accent or light-shade tree, not a main shade tree.
- Planting it in a dense, thirsty tropical bed. It prefers a dry, sunny, well-drained position with drought-tolerant neighbours.
- Skipping formative pruning on a young tree. A strong framework is easier to build early than to repair after a branch splits.

## Good to know

- Tabebuia argentea is a synonym of Tabebuia aurea, and Tabebuia caraiba is another; UAE nurseries and the wider trade use the older names, but the accepted name is Tabebuia aurea.
- A different yellow-flowered trumpet tree, Handroanthus chrysotrichus, the golden trumpet tree, is also grown in gardens. It has green leaves with golden hairs underneath, grows taller at 25 to 35 feet in University of Florida's description, and is a separate species, so check the name on the nursery tag.
- In its native Brazil, the tree is important for Spix's macaw, a species now extinct in the wild that relies on it for nesting; that is a fact about its home range, not a garden benefit.
- University of Florida's non-native plant assessment finds Tabebuia aurea not a problem species in Florida, and it may be recommended there.

## Using it in a garden

Roles: Specimen tree, Courtyard or entrance accent, Light shade, Seasonal focal point

Plant the yellow trumpet tree where its bare-branch bloom can be seen against a plain wall or open sky, in a sunny, sheltered corner of a lawn, courtyard or drive, away from exposed, windy edges. Its modest canopy gives dappled shade, so it works as an accent rather than a main shade tree. Underplant with silver, grey and succulent foliage for a desert-modern scheme, and avoid dense, thirsty tropical beds, which the tree does not need or enjoy.

- [Texas Sage](https://plantguide.ae/plants/texas-sage.md): Texas sage's silver-grey foliage echoes the tree's silvery leaves and gives a soft, low backdrop to the bare yellow flowering stems.
- [Olive](https://plantguide.ae/plants/olive.md): Olive's grey-green foliage and twisted trunk make a natural partner for the yellow trumpet tree's silver leaves and contorted branches, both with low water needs.
- [Agave](https://plantguide.ae/plants/agave.md): Agave's blue-grey rosettes beneath the tree give a bold, sculptural contrast to its twisting trunk and delicate yellow flowers.

## FAQ

**Is Tabebuia argentea the same as Tabebuia aurea?**
Yes. Tabebuia argentea is a synonym of Tabebuia aurea, the accepted name, and Tabebuia caraiba is another. Dubai nurseries usually sell it as Tabebuia argentea, sometimes with the common names golden trumpet tree, yellow tabebuia or Caribbean trumpet tree.

**When does the yellow trumpet tree flower in Dubai?**
Mainly in late winter and spring, on bare or leafless branches. University of Florida places flowering in winter and spring after the leaves drop, and nursery listings add that some flowers can appear sporadically through the year.

**Why did my yellow trumpet tree lose its leaves?**
It is deciduous, and leaf drop ahead of flowering is normal. Fresh silvery leaves return after the flowers finish.

**Can it cope with wind in Dubai?**
Not well. The wood is brittle, and nursery sources rate its wind tolerance as low. Plant it in a sheltered position and prune it young for a strong framework.

**How is it different from the pink trumpet tree?**
It is smaller, with silvery leaves and yellow flowers, whereas [Pink Trumpet Tree](https://plantguide.ae/plants/pink-trumpet-tree.md) is a larger tree with pink to lilac flowers and green leaves. Both flower on bare branches after a dry spell, but the yellow trumpet tree suits a drier, more desert-modern scheme.
