Colour without flowers: leaves splashed yellow, orange, red and green that need bright light to show. Spider mites love dry AC air, cold draughts drop its leaves, and the sap irritates skin.

## About

Meet the croton, the houseplant that does not bother with flowers. NC State counts hundreds of cultivars, with leaves patterned in yellow, pink, orange, red, bronze, purple and green, and Dubai nurseries often list it under its botanical genus name, codiaeum.

The colour is the reason to buy it and the reason to be fussy about light. NC State says bright light gives the best leaf colour, with some direct sun, and that a croton in too much shade loses its lower leaves. The RHS says too little light makes the leaves lose their colour or drop.

In Dubai there is a second reason for caution: dry, air-conditioned air. NC State says spider mites sometimes limit the use of crotons indoors to the short term. Treat it as a bright-window plant you keep an eye on, not one to leave alone.

Croton (Codiaeum variegatum) is a spurge (Euphorbiaceae) from Malaysia, the Pacific islands and northern Australia. NC State gives about 2.4 metres in the wild and typically 0.9 metres indoors. Dubai Municipality's Warsan Nursery lists codiaeums among its plants (Emirates 24|7, 13 May 2026).

Bright light gives the best colour (NC State), and the RHS says crotons need bright, indirect light in summer, with direct summer sun through glass able to scorch the foliage. In a room with tinted glass, put it right by the window; in summer, ease it back from hot west glass.

Water when the top of the compost dries and reduce it in winter (RHS); NC State suggests a resting period with less water from autumn to late winter. The RHS wants warm, even temperatures, between 18 and 35°C and never below 15°C, and lists leaf drop from dry compost, low humidity, cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C. A cold stream from an AC vent can cause the same drop.

Red spider mites are the main pest (RHS, NC State). Colorado State Extension says plants in very hot, dry sites are prone to mites, and that washing the plant and raising humidity are the best controls. Every part of the plant is poisonous (RHS, NC State), and the clear sap irritates skin and eyes and permanently stains fabric (NC State), so wear gloves when pruning or repotting.

## Indoors in Dubai

- **Light:** grows well in bright indirect–direct sun. Colour needs bright light: right at the window behind tinted glass, with some gentle sun. Hot summer sun through glass scorches the leaves (RHS), so ease it back from west glass in summer.
- **Dry air and air conditioning:** tolerance 2 out of 5 (1 = needs humidity help, 5 = indifferent). Spider mites are its main problem in dry AC air and can limit its life indoors (NC State). Check leaf undersides weekly, keep it out of vents and cold draughts, and stand it on damp pebbles.
- **Pets:** not pet-safe: keep it out of reach of cats and dogs.
- **Size:** medium size.
- **Rooms:** living room, hallway, home office.
- **Finding it in Dubai:** specialist: look in specialist plant shops and larger garden centres.
- **Outdoors:** never: keep it indoors all year.

## Through the year

A croton keeps its coloured leaves all year. NC State has it watered liberally from spring to autumn and sparingly in winter, with a rest of reduced watering from autumn to late winter. In Dubai the pest season is the long stretch from April to September when AC runs most days and mites build up. In June to September pull it back from hot west glass, where direct summer sun scorches the leaves (RHS), and between December and February keep it clear of cold glass and draughts, since it drops leaves below 15°C (RHS).

| When | What | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Feb–Apr, Oct–Nov | Plant: Buy and pot up | Autumn and spring. Carry it home warm, not in a hot or cold car: it drops leaves below 15°C (RHS). |
| Mar–Oct | New growth: Growing season | NC State says to water liberally from spring to autumn. |
| Apr–Sep | Pest watch: Check for spider mites | Look for dull leaves and fine speckling or webbing underneath; wash and raise humidity (Colorado State Extension). |
| Jun–Sep | Heat stress: Hot glass and dry air | Direct summer sun through glass scorches the leaves (RHS); keep it out of the vent airflow. |
| Nov–Feb | Dormant: Rest with less water | NC State suggests reduced watering from autumn to late winter. |

## Care in Dubai

- **Watering in summer:** Water when the top of the compost has dried (RHS), thoroughly, then let it drain. NC State says to water liberally from spring to autumn. The RHS prefers rainwater and avoids hard tap water, which raises alkalinity; rain is rare in Dubai, so filtered water is the practical choice.
- **Watering in winter:** Water sparingly (NC State, RHS) and keep it clear of cold glass; below 15°C it drops leaves.
- **Soil:** A well-drained, humus-rich mix that dries slightly between waterings (NC State). Use a pot with drainage holes.
- **Feeding:** Neither NC State nor the RHS gives a feeding schedule. If you feed, use a light houseplant fertiliser in spring and summer only, and flush the pot every four to six months to clear salts (University of Maryland).
- **Pruning:** Wear gloves: the clear sap from cut stems and leaves irritates and permanently stains fabric (NC State). Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth now and then (RHS) to remove dust, and trim only dead growth.
- **Planting:** Repot only when roots fill the pot, in spring. Buy in October to November or February to April and bring it home warm, since cold causes leaf drop.
- **Pests and problems:** Spider mites; Thrips; Mealybugs
- **Toxicity:** Poisonous if eaten, with a clear sap that irritates skin, eyes and the mouth. The RHS says all parts are poisonous, and NC State rates croton a low-severity poison with diterpene esters in every part. We could not open an ASPCA entry for croton to confirm its status, so treat it as unsafe for cats and dogs.

## Good and bad

**Pros**
- Leaves in yellow, orange, red, pink, bronze and green; hundreds of cultivars
- Loves bright light, so it suits sunny rooms that defeat shade plants
- Colourful all year without needing to flower

**Cons**
- Spider mites thrive in hot, dry AC air and can limit its life indoors
- Drops leaves in cold draughts, dry compost or below 15°C (RHS)
- Sap irritates skin and eyes and stains fabric; every part is poisonous
- Colour fades and lower leaves drop if the light is too low

## Common mistakes

- Giving it a dim corner. Crotons lose colour and drop lower leaves in shade (NC State, RHS); it needs bright light.
- Putting it in the vent airflow or beside cold glass at night. The RHS lists cold draughts, dry air and anything below 15°C among the causes of leaf drop.
- Ignoring the undersides of the leaves. Spider mites are the croton's main pest in hot, dry rooms; wash the leaves and raise humidity at the first speckling.
- Pruning or repotting bare-handed. The clear sap irritates skin and eyes and stains fabric permanently.
- Leaving it within a pet's reach. NC State says all parts of the plant are poisonous.

## Good to know

- Every part of the plant is poisonous, with diterpene esters in the sap (NC State). NC State rates it a low-severity poison, toxic mainly if a large quantity is eaten, and the sap irritates the mouth and skin.
- We could not open the ASPCA's croton page to confirm its entry, so we do not quote one. Treat it as unsafe for cats and dogs.
- Codiaeum is the name you will see on nursery lists; it is the same plant as croton.
- Dubai Municipality's Warsan Nursery lists codiaeums among its plants; a 13 May 2026 report put indoor plants there at AED 2 to 60, open Sunday to Thursday.

## Using it in a garden

Roles: Colour accent, Bright-window plant, Statement pot for a sunny room, Foliage contrast in a green group

Use a croton as the colour in a room of green plants, in the brightest spot you have: right by a south or east window behind tinted glass, or by a balcony door. The leaf colours sit well against warm neutral walls, terracotta and brass. Keep it out of the vent airflow and cold draughts, stand it on a saucer of damp pebbles, and keep gloves handy for pruning and repotting.

- [Snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md): Snake plant's stiff green blades make a calm backdrop that lets the croton's colour stand out, and both like bright light.
- [ZZ plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/zz-plant.md): ZZ plant's glossy, deep green stems sit at the croton's feet and need little care, leaving you to watch the croton.
- [Rubber plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/rubber-plant.md): Rubber plant's large, deep green leaves set off the croton's yellows and reds, and both want a bright spot.

## FAQ

**Why is my croton dropping leaves?**
The RHS lists dry compost, low humidity, cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C. NC State adds that plants lose lower leaves in too much shade. Check the soil, move it away from vents and cold glass, and give it bright light.

**Why are the leaves losing their colour?**
Not enough light (NC State, RHS). Bright light, with some direct sun in NC State's words, gives the best colour. In a Dubai summer, ease it back from hot west glass, which can scorch.

**How do I deal with spider mites on a croton?**
Colorado State Extension says the most effective controls are washing the plant and raising humidity around it. Rinse the leaves, tops and undersides, repeatedly over several weeks, and move the plant out of the vent airflow.

**Is croton toxic to cats and dogs?**
Treat it as toxic. The RHS says all parts are poisonous and NC State rates it a low-severity poison, with a sap that irritates the mouth and skin. We could not open an ASPCA entry to confirm, so keep it out of reach.

**Is croton the same as codiaeum?**
Yes. Codiaeum variegatum is the botanical name, and Dubai nurseries often list the plant as codiaeum.

**Where can I buy a croton in Dubai?**
Dubai Municipality's Warsan Nursery (Warsan 3, Gate 2) lists codiaeums, open Sunday to Thursday, 8am to 3.30pm, according to a 13 May 2026 report. Specialist plant shops stock them too. Buy in October to November or February to April.
