Dubai's growing year runs backwards from Europe's: October to March is the cool season and the busy planting window, while April to September is mostly about keeping things alive.

## Why the calendar runs cool-to-hot

In Dubai, the gardening year is set by heat, not by frost. The cool season, roughly **October to March**, is when soil and air temperatures let roots establish before the next summer arrives. October is the single busiest planting month: nurseries restock, Dubai Municipality replants its public beds, and most new trees, shrubs, lawns and seasonal colour go in over the following few weeks. Planting in the cool season isn't a style choice — it's the difference between a plant that establishes and one that spends its first summer fighting for survival.

April through September is a different job. Very little goes in the ground; the focus shifts to watering, shade and simply keeping existing planting alive until the weather turns again — see [our summer watering guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/watering-garden-dubai-summer.md). You can also see this laid out visually on our [planting calendar](https://plantguide.ae/calendar.md).

**Dubai's gardening year**

- Oct–Mar: Main planting window — Trees, shrubs, lawns and most seasonal colour go in now. (plant)
- Sep–Oct: Sow cool-season seasonal flowers — Marigold, petunia, zinnia and vinca sown or planted as young plants. (sow)
- Jan–Apr: Peak seasonal colour (flower)
- Jun–Aug: Peak heat stress — New planting mostly paused; established plants need deep, infrequent watering. (heat-stress)
- Nov–Feb: Formative pruning window for trees and shrubs (prune)
- Dec–Jan: Slowest growth for warm-season lawns — Growth slows on the coolest nights but lawns rarely fully brown off in Dubai's mild winter. (dormant)

## Month by month

Use this as a general guide — always match watering and planting to the actual weather that week, not the calendar alone.

**Dubai planting calendar**

| Month | What to plant | Garden tasks | Water & pool |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| January | Seasonal colour, trees, shrubs, new lawn | Light formative pruning; feed cool-season colour | Reduce irrigation; check for leaks after any rain |
| February | Trees, palms, shrubs, climbers — still prime window | Finish pruning before the spring flush; overseed thin lawn patches | Irrigation still light |
| March | Last calls for trees and shrubs before heat builds | Watch for spring pests such as aphids on new growth | Start increasing watering frequency late in the month |
| April | Heat-tolerant edibles and succulents only | Mulch beds before summer; check irrigation lines | Move to early-morning/evening watering only |
| May | Avoid new planting where possible | Deadhead spent seasonal colour; raise mower height | Increase frequency for lawns and any recent planting |
| June | Hold off on planting | Watch for heat stress; shade young plants if needed | Peak watering; weekly pool checks matter more as algae risk rises |
| July | Hold off on planting | Deep, infrequent watering for trees; avoid fertilising in extreme heat | Peak watering; consider a holiday watering plan if travelling |
| August | Hold off on planting | Inspect for pests that thrive in heat, such as mites and mealybug | Peak watering continues |
| September | Prepare beds; Dubai Municipality begins its early-winter flower cycle late this month | Clear summer-stressed plants; top up mulch | Start tapering watering as temperatures ease |
| October | Busiest month: trees, palms, shrubs, lawns, seasonal colour | The bulk of the year's planting and replanting happens now | Irrigation schedules drop back toward winter levels |
| November | Continue tree, shrub and seasonal colour planting | Plant or overseed lawns while the soil is still warm | Moderate watering |
| December | Trees, shrubs, seasonal colour — the planting window stays open | Light pruning; check irrigation controllers before the new year | Lightest watering of the year |

## Why October is the busiest month

Dubai Municipality works to a seasonal rhythm of its own: it plants seasonal flowers in three phases — an early-winter batch from September to December, a main winter season from January to May, and a lighter summer cycle from May to September — refreshing tens of millions of seasonal flowers across the city's parks and roads each year ([Gulf News](https://gulfnews.com/uae/environment/flower-planting-drive-keeps-dubai-in-bloom-1.1172222)). Private gardens follow the same logic: soil is still warm from summer, days are cooling, and there are roughly six months of mild weather ahead for roots to establish before the next heatwave.

> **Tip: Buy bigger, not more.** For a slow grower like [Ghaf](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ghaf.md), a larger nursery specimen bought in October will usually outperform three small ones planted in spring — it skips a year of establishment stress.

## What happens if you plant outside the cool season

It isn't impossible, but it's harder work: new roots have to establish while losing water fast to heat and wind, so planting outside the cool season means daily attention, shade cloth for the first few weeks, and a higher chance of loss. If you must plant outside October–March — replacing storm damage, for example — choose heat-tolerant, low-water species and be ready to water noticeably more than that plant's normal establishment routine would call for in winter.

## What Dubai Municipality plants, and why it's a useful guide

Dubai Municipality's own seasonal colour rotation leans on a small, proven list: petunia, tagetes (marigold), zinnia, vinca, salvia, antirrhinum, pelargonium, ageratum and alyssum, alongside longer-lived permanent bedding. It's a useful cheat sheet for a home garden, precisely because it's chosen for reliability at scale rather than novelty — if it survives thousands of roundabouts and roadside beds across a Dubai summer-to-winter cycle, it will generally survive a villa garden bed too. [Petunia](https://plantguide.ae/plants/petunia.md), [Marigold](https://plantguide.ae/plants/marigold.md), [Zinnia](https://plantguide.ae/plants/zinnia.md) and [Vinca](https://plantguide.ae/plants/vinca.md) are all on the canonical UAE plant list for exactly this reason.

## Trees, lawns and seasonal colour don't move at the same speed

"Plant in the cool season" hides three different timelines. Trees and palms are the least time-sensitive within the window — anywhere from October to March works, and the priority is simply avoiding summer. Lawns benefit from going in earlier in the window, around October or November, so the grass has maximum mild weather to knit together before next summer's heat and traffic arrive. Seasonal colour is the most flexible and the most disposable: it's typically replaced every few months regardless, so timing matters less than picking varieties suited to the specific month, following the same logic behind Dubai Municipality's own multi-phase rotation.

**Good bets for cool-season planting**

- [Ghaf](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ghaf.md) (Prosopis cineraria): The UAE's national tree: a deep-rooted native that stays green through summer, tolerates salty soil and needs very little water once established.
- [Bougainvillea](https://plantguide.ae/plants/bougainvillea.md) (Bougainvillea glabra): Dubai's most reliable colour: a thorny, sun-loving climber that flowers hardest when watered a little less, not more, and covers walls, pergolas and boundaries on very little care.
- [Vinca](https://plantguide.ae/plants/vinca.md) (Catharanthus roseus): Dubai's summer bedding workhorse: a heat-loving annual that keeps flowering from May to September, when most flowering plants give up.
- [Marigold](https://plantguide.ae/plants/marigold.md) (Tagetes erecta): A reliable, sun-loving annual that Dubai Municipality plants every September–October for bold gold and orange colour through the cool season.
- [Seashore paspalum](https://plantguide.ae/plants/seashore-paspalum.md) (Paspalum vaginatum): A fine-bladed warm-season lawn grass that shrugs off saline irrigation water better than any other turf sold in the UAE, but needs full sun to stay dense.
- [Desert Rose](https://plantguide.ae/plants/desert-rose.md) (Adenium obesum): A slow-growing succulent with a swollen trunk and vivid trumpet flowers that thrives on neglect in Dubai's heat — but every part of the plant is toxic if eaten.

## FAQ

**Can I plant in Dubai in summer?**
You can, but it's much harder work — new roots need daily attention and shade in peak heat, and losses are more common. Where possible, wait for the cool season from October.

**When does the cool season start and end in Dubai?**
Roughly October to March, though the exact start and end shift a little year to year with the weather — treat the calendar as a guide, not a fixed date.

**Is October really the best time to plant a tree?**
Yes. Soil is still warm from summer, temperatures are dropping, and there are around six months of mild weather ahead for roots to establish before the next summer.

**Do lawns follow the same calendar?**
Broadly yes — new lawns and overseeding go in during the cool season. See our [lawn grass comparison](https://plantguide.ae/grasses) for grass-specific timing.
