ASPCA's non-toxic list for cats and dogs, the common UAE houseplants it marks toxic, the 'money plant' naming trap, and what to do if your pet chews a leaf.

## The short answer

ASPCA lists parlour palm, areca palm, kentia palm, lady palm, cast iron plant, ponytail palm, peperomia and moth orchid as non-toxic to both cats and dogs. It lists pothos, monstera, philodendron, peace lily, ZZ plant, snake plant, aglaonema, dracaena and jade as toxic. All of them are common in UAE homes and shops.

Two rules run through this guide. First, we use ASPCA status only, never a shop's 'pet-safe' label. Second, non-toxic does not mean safe to eat: ASPCA says eating any plant material can cause vomiting and stomach upset in dogs and cats, and that its list is not all-inclusive. If you think your pet has eaten a plant, call your vet.

## Non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA)

Each plant below has an ASPCA entry that lists it as non-toxic to both dogs and cats. Entries sometimes use a different Latin name from the one on a shop label, which the notes point out.

**Easy and non-toxic**

- [Parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md) (Chamaedorea elegans): The cheapest real palm in Dubai shops, and one of the easiest: it takes dim rooms and dry air, grows slowly and is safe around cats and dogs. Keep it out of vent draughts and check for spider mites.
- [Areca palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/areca-palm.md) (Dypsis lutescens): A feathery, multi-stemmed palm that is non-toxic to pets. It wants bright indirect light and steady moisture; dry AC air brings brown tips and spider mites, so check it often.
- [Kentia palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/kentia-palm.md) (Howea forsteriana): The graceful, slow floor palm for living rooms and majlis. It copes with low light, dust and drier air and is listed as safe for cats and dogs, but it costs more and grows slowly, so buy the height you want.
- [Lady palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/lady-palm.md) (Rhapis excelsa): A slow, clumping fan palm for shaded corners and formal rooms such as a majlis. It tolerates deep shade and low humidity, is listed as safe for cats and dogs, and needs patience, as it is very slow to grow.
- [Cast iron plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/cast-iron-plant.md) (Aspidistra elatior): A forest-floor plant that tolerates dark corners, dry air and missed waterings better than most houseplants. Listed as safe for cats and dogs. Slow, and happiest left alone, out of direct sun.
- [Ponytail palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ponytail-palm.md) (Beaucarnea recurvata): A sculptural, water-storing plant, not a true palm, that shrugs off dry AC air and missed waterings. It wants the brightest window you have, a pot that drains, and very little water. Listed as safe for cats and dogs.

At least one UAE online shop sells it as a palm for pots. If you have a pet, skip it.

## Not on the ASPCA list we checked

Some plants sold in the UAE had no entry in the ASPCA database when we searched it on 7 October 2026. 'Not listed' is not the same as safe.

- [Air plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/air-plant.md) (Tillandsia): not on the ASPCA list; treat with caution.
- [Bird's nest fern](https://plantguide.ae/plants/birds-nest-fern.md) (Asplenium nidus): not on the ASPCA list; treat with caution. ASPCA lists a different Asplenium fern (Asplenium bulbiferum) as non-toxic, but not this species.
- [Croton](https://plantguide.ae/plants/croton.md) (Codiaeum variegatum): not on the ASPCA list; treat with caution.
- [Olive](https://plantguide.ae/plants/olive.md) (Olea europaea): not on the ASPCA list. ASPCA lists Russian olive and autumn olive, which are different plants. Treat with caution.

## The 'money plant' naming trap

Four different plants are sold as a money plant or money tree, and two of them are toxic. In UAE shops 'money plant' usually means pothos. Plntd sells 'Money Plant (Golden Pothos)', and Greensouq lists *Epipremnum aureum* as 'Money Plant'. That is the toxic one.

**One name, four plants**

| Name on the label | Plant | ASPCA status |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Money plant (the usual UAE meaning) | [Pothos](https://plantguide.ae/plants/pothos.md), *Epipremnum aureum* | Toxic to dogs and cats |
| Money tree, braided money tree | [Money tree](https://plantguide.ae/plants/money-tree.md), *Pachira aquatica* | Non-toxic to dogs and cats. ASPCA also lists 'money plant' as another name for it. |
| Jade plant, lucky plant, money tree | [Jade plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/jade-plant.md), *Crassula ovata* | Toxic to dogs and cats. ASPCA says jade is also called money tree or money plant and is not the same as Pachira. |
| Chinese money plant | [Chinese money plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/chinese-money-plant.md), *Pilea peperomioides* | Non-toxic (ASPCA article on succulents) |

The rule: buy by botanical name, not common name. Ask the shop for it or find it on the label, and match it to the ASPCA entries above. If a listing does not give one, treat the plant as unknown.

## Why shop 'pet-safe' labels can be wrong

A shop label is marketing, and nobody checks it against the ASPCA list for you. On 7 October 2026 we read one Dubai shop's 'pet-safe' collection page. It promised non-toxic plants for curious cats and dogs, yet it listed monstera, aglaonema, philodendron, syngonium and anthurium, which ASPCA lists as toxic. On another shop's pothos page, one section called the plant pet-friendly and non-toxic while its care summary said to keep it away from pets. ASPCA lists pothos as toxic.

A label can be right, but it is not evidence. Three habits help:

- Check the botanical name against the ASPCA entry, not the badge on the product.
- Beware shared names. 'Money plant', 'ribbon plant' and 'rubber plant' each cover more than one species.
- Expect old names. ASPCA still lists zebra haworthia as Haworthia fasciata and prayer plant under Calathea insignis, so match by genus as well as by name.

## If your pet chews a plant

1. **Move the plant out of reach.** Stop your pet eating more, and take the plant out of its reach (ASPCA).
2. **Note what it was.** Find the botanical name from the label or shop listing, take a photo of the plant, and note roughly how much was chewed and when.
3. **Call your vet straight away.** Tell them the plant's name. ASPCA's advice is to contact your local vet, or its own poison control line, if you suspect your pet has eaten a plant. ASPCA's line is US-based and charges a consultation fee. We could not confirm a UAE plant-poisoning helpline, so your vet is the first call. Save your vet's out-of-hours number now.
4. **Go to a vet hospital if swallowing or breathing is affected.** ASPCA says a pet that has trouble swallowing or breathing should be taken directly to a veterinary hospital.
5. **Follow your vet's instructions.** Do not try home remedies unless your vet tells you to.

## FAQ

**Is monstera safe for dogs and cats?**
No. ASPCA lists Swiss cheese plant (*Monstera deliciosa*) as toxic to dogs and cats. It contains insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause mouth irritation, drooling and vomiting. Pothos, philodendron and peace lily are on the same list.

**Is pothos safe for pets?**
No. ASPCA lists golden pothos (*Epipremnum aureum*) as toxic to dogs and cats. In the UAE it is often sold as 'money plant', so check the botanical name on the label.

**Is money tree safe for cats?**
The braided money tree (*Pachira aquatica*) is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to ASPCA. Jade, which is sometimes also called money tree, is toxic. Buy by botanical name.

**Is spider plant safe for cats?**
ASPCA's plant database lists spider plant as non-toxic to cats and dogs. A 2019 ASPCA article describes it as mildly toxic, with a risk of mild stomach upset. If your cat chews it regularly, watch for vomiting and call your vet if you are worried.

**Are succulents safe for pets?**
It depends on the species. ASPCA lists zebra haworthia as non-toxic, and its succulents article lists Chinese money plant as non-toxic. It lists jade plant, aloe, kalanchoe and string of pearls as toxic.

**What if my pet nibbles a non-toxic plant?**
ASPCA says eating any plant material can cause vomiting and stomach upset in dogs and cats, even from non-toxic plants. Contact your vet if you are worried or you are not sure which plant it was.
