## The short answer

Start with the light in your room. Then check three Dubai things: how dry your AC makes the air, whether a cat or dog will chew the plant, and whether you travel in summer. For most flats the easy starting set is [ZZ plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/zz-plant.md), [snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md), [pothos](https://plantguide.ae/plants/pothos.md), [parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md) and [cast iron plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/cast-iron-plant.md). They put up with dim rooms and forgive a late watering.

Pets change the list. ASPCA lists pothos, ZZ plant and snake plant as toxic to cats and dogs, so in a home with a pet start from the [pet-safe guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/pet-safe-indoor-plants-uae.md) instead.

- **3–9 months** — a year that Dubai households run their AC, typically May or June to October (Murtagh et al., Buildings & Cities, 2022)
- **6+ hours** — of direct sun a day: the full-sun rating NC State gives ponytail palm and olive, which rooms behind tinted glass often do not offer (NC State Plant Toolbox)

## A dim apartment: tinted glass, deep rooms, north windows

Tinted or low-E glass, a north-facing window or a living room that runs deep from the glass all mean less light than plant labels assume. A low-E coating alone takes only a further 5–10% of the visible light plants use ([Melinda Myers](https://www.melindamyers.com/audio-video/melindas-garden-moment-audio-tips/houseplants-holiday-plants-cut-flowers/low-e-glass-impact-on-houseplants)). Tint takes more, and how much depends on the glass. Light also falls off quickly with distance from the window, so a corner 3 m back can be dim even in a bright flat.

Choose plants that tolerate low light, and know what that means: they survive and grow slowly. [Cast iron plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/cast-iron-plant.md) prefers partial to full shade and is intolerant of direct sun. [ZZ plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/zz-plant.md) will grow in very low light, even under fluorescent tubes alone. [Snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md) tolerates very low light. [Pothos](https://plantguide.ae/plants/pothos.md) survives long periods in low light but loses its variegation. [Parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md) copes with dry air and dim light. Green and silver forms of [aglaonema](https://plantguide.ae/plants/aglaonema.md) adapt to low light, while the colourful pink and red forms need brighter light to keep their colour.

The full version, with distances from the window, bathrooms and what fails in the dark, is in our [low-light guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/low-light-indoor-plants-dubai.md).

**For a dim room**

- [Cast iron plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/cast-iron-plant.md) (Aspidistra elatior): A forest-floor plant that tolerates dark corners, dry air and missed waterings better than most houseplants. Listed as safe for cats and dogs. Slow, and happiest left alone, out of direct sun.
- [ZZ plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/zz-plant.md) (Zamioculcas zamiifolia): A near-indestructible houseplant for Dubai's air-conditioned rooms: it stores water in thick rhizomes, tolerates deep shade, and can go a month or more between waterings.
- [Snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md) (Dracaena trifasciata): The most forgiving houseplant for a Dubai apartment: it shrugs off low light and dry AC air, and overwatering is the only real way to lose it.
- [Pothos](https://plantguide.ae/plants/pothos.md) (Epipremnum aureum): A fast-growing trailing vine that tolerates the low light and dry air of a Dubai apartment better than almost any other houseplant, and roots easily from a cutting in water.
- [Aglaonema](https://plantguide.ae/plants/aglaonema.md) (Aglaonema modestum): A low-light foliage plant with silver-green, pink or red leaves. It copes with dim rooms but dislikes cold draughts and mineral build-up in the pot, so in Dubai keep it out of vents and hot glass.
- [Parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md) (Chamaedorea elegans): The cheapest real palm in Dubai shops, and one of the easiest: it takes dim rooms and dry air, grows slowly and is safe around cats and dogs. Keep it out of vent draughts and check for spider mites.

## A bright villa: big glazing and garden views

Tall villa glazing gives you the light most plants want, so use it for the plants a dim flat cannot grow. [Ponytail palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ponytail-palm.md) wants full sun and does well in dry indoor air. [Spineless yucca](https://plantguide.ae/plants/spineless-yucca.md) takes full sun or partial shade and rots if overwatered. [Rubber plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/rubber-plant.md) and [fiddle-leaf fig](https://plantguide.ae/plants/fiddle-leaf-fig.md) prefer bright indirect light and protection from afternoon sun. [Bird of paradise](https://plantguide.ae/plants/bird-of-paradise.md) likes a well-lit, sunny spot.

Glass does not protect leaves from hot sun. NC State warns that fiddle-leaf fig scorches in too much direct sun and says to keep monstera out of direct sun. In midsummer the sun is almost overhead in Dubai, so west-facing glass and glass with no overhang take the harshest light. If leaves bleach or crisp after you move a plant, step it back from the glass.

Olive trees are sold as indoor trees for Japandi and majlis rooms. NC State rates the olive as a full-sun plant, six or more hours of direct sun a day. Keep an [olive](https://plantguide.ae/plants/olive.md) only on your sunniest glass or on a balcony.

**For a bright room**

- [Ponytail palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ponytail-palm.md) (Beaucarnea recurvata): A sculptural, water-storing plant, not a true palm, that shrugs off dry AC air and missed waterings. It wants the brightest window you have, a pot that drains, and very little water. Listed as safe for cats and dogs.
- [Spineless yucca](https://plantguide.ae/plants/spineless-yucca.md) (Yucca gigantea): A tall, sword-leaved plant with soft, spineless leaf tips that wants the sunniest window in the flat. Dry AC air does not bother it; low light and wet soil do. Harmful to cats and dogs.
- [Rubber plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/rubber-plant.md) (Ficus elastica): A glossy, dark-leaved fig that builds a tall, tidy trunk in a bright room. In Dubai it dislikes being moved, cold AC draughts and wet feet, and it drops leaves to say so.
- [Fiddle-leaf fig](https://plantguide.ae/plants/fiddle-leaf-fig.md) (Ficus lyrata): A striking but genuinely fussy houseplant: it wants the brightest spot in a Dubai apartment and a scrupulously consistent routine, and it sulks — by dropping leaves — at almost any change.
- [Monstera](https://plantguide.ae/plants/monstera.md) (Monstera deliciosa): A big-leaved climber whose splits and holes appear only with enough light and room. In Dubai it wants a bright spot out of hot glass, a support to climb, and a place away from the AC vent.
- [Bird of paradise](https://plantguide.ae/plants/bird-of-paradise.md) (Strelitzia reginae): An architectural, banana-leaved plant grown across Dubai for its orange-and-blue flowers; more drought-tolerant than it looks once settled, but dislikes salty soil and flowers best away from harsh afternoon sun.

## Dry, air-conditioned rooms

Many Dubai households run AC day and night for months. A 2022 study of Dubai homes found AC running three to nine months a year, typically from May or June to October and mostly around the clock, with windows opened only briefly or in winter ([Murtagh et al.](https://journal-buildingscities.org/articles/10.5334/bc.147)). Air-conditioned rooms are drier than most tropical foliage plants like. Exact figures vary from flat to flat, and a cheap hygrometer will tell you yours.

Some plants cope. [Ponytail palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ponytail-palm.md) does well even in dry indoor air, [snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md) tolerates low humidity, [lady palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/lady-palm.md) has low humidity needs, [parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md) thrives where dry air and dim light defeat other plants, and [peperomia](https://plantguide.ae/plants/peperomia.md) prefers medium to low humidity. Others struggle. [Boston fern](https://plantguide.ae/plants/boston-fern.md), [prayer plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/prayer-plant.md) and [alocasia](https://plantguide.ae/plants/alocasia.md) want high humidity, and NC State links dry air to scale and spider mites on Boston fern.

Keep plants out of the direct airflow from vents. NC State notes brown spots on fiddle-leaf fig when room temperature swings with heating or cooling vents. Misting does not help: University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension says you would have to mist every few minutes to make any real difference. A humidifier does work. Grouping plants makes a slightly more humid pocket but will not fix a dry room. More in our guide to [plants and air conditioning](https://plantguide.ae/guides/indoor-plants-air-conditioning-dubai.md).

## Homes with cats or dogs

ASPCA lists these as non-toxic to both cats and dogs: [Areca palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/areca-palm.md), [kentia palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/kentia-palm.md), [lady palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/lady-palm.md), [parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md), [cast iron plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/cast-iron-plant.md), [ponytail palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ponytail-palm.md), [peperomia](https://plantguide.ae/plants/peperomia.md) and [moth orchid](https://plantguide.ae/plants/moth-orchid.md). It lists [pothos](https://plantguide.ae/plants/pothos.md), [monstera](https://plantguide.ae/plants/monstera.md), [philodendron](https://plantguide.ae/plants/philodendron.md), [peace lily](https://plantguide.ae/plants/peace-lily.md), [ZZ plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/zz-plant.md) and [snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md) as toxic. Non-toxic still does not mean harmless: ASPCA says eating any plant material can cause vomiting and an upset stomach in dogs and cats.

Watch the 'money plant' label. In Dubai shops it usually means pothos, which is toxic to pets. The braided money tree, *Pachira aquatica*, is non-toxic, and jade is toxic. Both have plant pages: [Money tree](https://plantguide.ae/plants/money-tree.md) and [jade plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/jade-plant.md). The [pet-safe guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/pet-safe-indoor-plants-uae.md) sorts out the names and has the full table.

**Non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA)**

- [Areca palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/areca-palm.md) (Dypsis lutescens): A feathery, multi-stemmed palm that is non-toxic to pets. It wants bright indirect light and steady moisture; dry AC air brings brown tips and spider mites, so check it often.
- [Kentia palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/kentia-palm.md) (Howea forsteriana): The graceful, slow floor palm for living rooms and majlis. It copes with low light, dust and drier air and is listed as safe for cats and dogs, but it costs more and grows slowly, so buy the height you want.
- [Lady palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/lady-palm.md) (Rhapis excelsa): A slow, clumping fan palm for shaded corners and formal rooms such as a majlis. It tolerates deep shade and low humidity, is listed as safe for cats and dogs, and needs patience, as it is very slow to grow.
- [Peperomia](https://plantguide.ae/plants/peperomia.md) (Peperomia obtusifolia): A tidy, glossy desk plant that suits a home office or shelf in Dubai. It copes with household air, is listed as safe for cats and dogs, and mostly needs you to hold back on the watering. Easy to share from cuttings.
- [Moth orchid](https://plantguide.ae/plants/moth-orchid.md) (Phalaenopsis hybrids): The orchid that arrives as a gift in Dubai: flowers can last months in a bright room with no direct sun. Safe for cats and dogs, but it needs a bark mix, a pot that drains and a cool spell to flower again.
- [Money tree](https://plantguide.ae/plants/money-tree.md) (Pachira aquatica): A braided-trunk tree with glossy hand-shaped leaves and a swollen, water-storing base, non-toxic to pets. It likes bright indirect light and drainage; wet compost rots it and drought drops the leaves.

## If you travel in summer

Plants that store water cope with a missed watering better than leafy ones. [ZZ plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/zz-plant.md) stores water in its rhizomes and fleshy leaves, [snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md) needs its soil to dry out between waterings, and [ponytail palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ponytail-palm.md) is drought tolerant. Water thoroughly just before you leave and move plants back from direct light to a cooler spot so they lose less water (University of Saskatchewan). For a longer trip use a wick, a capillary mat or self-watering pots, and test the set-up before you go.

Set the AC higher rather than switching it off: a shut-up flat with no cooling can get far hotter than plants tolerate. Our [summer travel guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/indoor-plants-summer-travel-dubai.md) has the full checklist.

## Plants to think twice about

- [Boston fern](https://plantguide.ae/plants/boston-fern.md), [prayer plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/prayer-plant.md) and [alocasia](https://plantguide.ae/plants/alocasia.md) need high humidity. Fine with a humidifier, a struggle without one.
- [Olive](https://plantguide.ae/plants/olive.md) is a full-sun plant sold as an indoor tree. Sunniest glass or a balcony only.
- Any plant you carry home in summer. University of Arkansas Extension warns that a plant in a shut car can be destroyed in a short time. See our [buying guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/where-to-buy-indoor-plants-dubai.md).

## When to buy

Buy in the cooler months, October to November or February to April, so the plant is not carried home in summer heat. Airport average highs for June to August run 40–42°C, against 26–34°C in February to April ([Wikipedia: Climate of Dubai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Dubai)).

Our [where-to-buy guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/where-to-buy-indoor-plants-dubai.md) lists nurseries, online shops and what plants cost. The [October planting page](https://plantguide.ae/what-to-plant/october.md) has the month's indoor jobs.

## FAQ

**What is the easiest indoor plant for a Dubai flat?**
ZZ plant, snake plant and pothos are the usual answers. NC State says ZZ grows in very low light, snake plant tolerates very low light and pothos survives long periods in low light. All three are toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA), so with a pet choose [parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md) or [cast iron plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/cast-iron-plant.md) instead.

**Will indoor plants survive Dubai's air conditioning?**
The tough ones do. [Snake plant](https://plantguide.ae/plants/snake-plant.md), [ponytail palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/ponytail-palm.md), [parlour palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/parlour-palm.md) and [lady palm](https://plantguide.ae/plants/lady-palm.md) cope with dry air. Humidity-lovers such as Boston fern and prayer plant brown at the edges and attract mites. Keep every plant out of the direct vent airflow, and water by the soil, not the calendar.

**Can I keep an olive tree indoors in Dubai?**
Only in your sunniest spot. NC State rates [olive](https://plantguide.ae/plants/olive.md) as a full-sun plant needing six or more hours of direct sun a day, and most rooms behind tinted glass give less. A balcony or the brightest glass in the house suits it better.

**How often should I water indoor plants in summer?**
Water when the soil says so, not on a fixed day. Push a finger about 5 cm (two inches) into the soil, or lift the pot to feel its weight, and water if it is dry. Frequency depends on the pot, the light and the room, so there is no safe weekly rule. Flush the pot with clear water every four to six months to wash out salts (University of Maryland Extension).

**Which indoor plants are safe for pets?**
ASPCA lists areca palm, kentia palm, lady palm, parlour palm, cast iron plant, ponytail palm, peperomia and moth orchid as non-toxic to cats and dogs. It lists pothos, monstera, philodendron, peace lily, ZZ plant and snake plant as toxic. See the [pet-safe guide](https://plantguide.ae/guides/pet-safe-indoor-plants-uae.md) for the full tables.

**When should I buy and pot up indoor plants in Dubai?**
October to November and February to April, when you can carry a plant home without summer heat. In June to August average highs are 40–42°C and a shut car can destroy a plant quickly (University of Arkansas Extension).
